Highlights from this month’s list

There’s a few regulars as usual in this month’s list such as Hong Kong in both Economy and Business, Kualau Lumpur and many destinations in India. again as well. Hong Kong is a good option for anyone looking to try the 2017 A380 business class seat.

There’s lots of blackout dates on most destinations this month. Interestingly, the relaxation of China’s border controls sees several China points on this round of Spontaneous Escapes. Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing all appear on the list, in both Business and Economy. All 3 destinations also have the same blackout periods of 27-30 April in both directions. I’d have expected flights ex-China to be really full, so it’s surprising to see these on the list. China’s border still isn’t visa-free for countries who previously didn’t require one for short stays, so I can’t see the Spontaneous Escapes generating much incremental demand. Here’s what the Spontaneous Escape rates for the 3 Chinese points look like:

  • Singapore Guangzhou vv Business class: 23,800 miles one-way
  • Singapore to Guangzhou vv Economy: 11,550 one-way
  • Singapore to Shanghai/Beijing vv Business: 30,100 one-way
  • Singapore to Shanghai/Beijing vv Economy: 15,050 one-way

Guangzhou is currently served by a medium-haul A350 (SH* registration) with the 2017 regional business, as is the SQ836/825 Shanghai flight pair. SQ830/833 to/from Shanghai gets the 787-10, with the same medium-haul Stelia Symphony seat. Beijing on the other hand, gets a long-haul (SM*/SJ*) A350 with the 2013 long-haul business class.

Within Southeast Asia, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh and Manila all appear for both Business and Economy, in both directions. There’s a number of West Asia destinations too, especially in Business class. Though there’s a fair bit of blackout dates for both regions

Premium Economy redemptions are surprisingly scarce this month. The US nonstops usually feature, but this month there’s only the following US routes for Premium Economy:

  • Frankfurt to New York (JFK) vv Premium Economy: 36,400 one-way
  • Los Angeles to Tokyo Narita: 51,100
  • San Francisco to Singapore: 52,500
  • Newark to Singapore: 56,350

Based on that limited selection, it appears PEY demand is pretty healthy in April, particularly ex-SIN.

Conclusion

The April 2023 KrisFlyer Spontaneous Escapes list has been released. China appears on the list, which is a surprise, but honestly not of much use to most travellers. Premium Economy redemptions are also surprisingly limited for April. As always, limited redemption space available and all bookings must be ticketed by 31 March, so act fast if there’s a destination on the list that catches your eye.
